"Beautiful Mess" Out Today!
My first single dropped today! “Beautiful Mess” was written in response to the enormous pressure I felt as a young person to go out and "change the world." As an adolescent learning about all the incredible and seemingly uphill battles humanity faces I was immobilized by the enormity of what needed to "change." The weight of this responsibility, combined with a fragile brain that tended toward depression, was too much for me to bear as a small sensitive human.
After dealing with my first bouts of mania and major depression, these words by Joseph Campbell were an incredible balm: "The world is perfect. It's a mess. It has always been a mess. We're not going to change it. Our job is to straighten out our own lives." This is not a call for apathy or for running away from the hardship around us, but instead a call to own my own life. To look carefully at my strengths and to acknowledge my achilles heel.
For me it has meant acknowledging the bipolar brain I've been gifted with. It has meant caring for my body and brain so that I can do the work I have been charged with -- which for now, is making art, caring for our small plot of land, fostering a loving community tied together by music, and shepherding two small children as they too come to their own understanding of this confusing and precious world we inhabit.
Big love to @dacostaband for adding musical depth and beauty to the songs and to @tristanwilliams for making me look so glam in these shots! 😅
